Time To Start Preparing For Winter
Don’t let this Indian summer fool you, winter is coming (as the Starks are so fond of saying!) and it will be here sooner than you think. Before the cold weather hits, consider having your HVAC system winterized to handle the winter temperatures.
Winterizing your HVAC system offers many benefits. The first step in this process is sealing the air conditioning vents. This will eliminate drafts and improve the efficiency of your furnace, saving you money on your utility bills.
While HVAC systems are usually pretty rugged, not all of the components respond well to the cold. Winterizing the unit will improve longevity and ensure it is protected from the many elements, like snow, wind, and ice, which come with the season. The winterization process is also a great opportunity to clean the unit. Dirt, dust and other debris can hide inside and cause damage or rust. Be sure to clean the surrounding area, as sticks and rocks can cause further harm.
Here are a few more tips to remember as the season changes:
DO:
• Clean or replace the air filter, if necessary. Remember to use pleated or HEPA filters as they filter the air more efficiently and keep the system cleaner.
• Check the air vents to make sure nothing is restricting the airflow.
• Check the seal on the furnace’s blower doors. The blower keeps gasses from leaking into your home and if the doors are not sealed properly a dangerous situation could occur.
• Check your thermostat settings. Is it still in AC mode?
• Move flammable items, such as chemicals, clothing and paper products, away from the furnace.
• Schedule an appointment with A&A Mechanical to ensure your system is running at its optimum. Regular maintenance is important – small problems can quickly become dangerous if not corrected.
DON’T:
• Don’t cover any outside units with plastic.
• Don’t wait until the first cold night before turning on the furnace for the first time.
• Don’t assume that because you have a carbon monoxide detector, you don’t need to schedule regular furnace inspections. What if the battery is dead?!
• Don’t perform any maintenance or try to service the furnace yourself. What you think will save you a few dollars may cost you a lot more.
